Intent

Design and Technology is an inspiring, innovative and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At St. Thomas’ CE Primary School, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real life problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to link work to other subject areas, and draw on skills from disciplines, such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. DT aims to encourage children to take risks, to develop new innovative designs and to be reflective learners by giving them opportunities to evaluate their own work, as well as the design and work of others within school and the wider world. Children are given time to test their own products and plan for making adjustments which enables them to change their designs and improve their end product.
