Reception Baseline Assessment

St Thomas’ Baseline Assessment
During the first 6 weeks in Nursery and Reception, staff observe the children to understand their level of learning and development. Information received from our children’s prior settings also supports this assessment as well as information shared from parents and carers at the Meet the Teacher appointments before the children start at St Thomas.
Early Learning Goals
At the end of the Reception year teachers assess the children against the Early Learning Goals. These goals are the expected level of learning for a typical child at the end of their Reception year. Teachers must judge if a child is at the expected level or working towards in each of the 17 areas of learning. If a child is not at an expected level in an area of learning, this information is discussed with their Year 1 teacher for them to continue their development in Year 1.
